You're mistaken Jon, the deal was taken off the table because Theo Epstein wouldn't include Jon Lester under any circumstances, the proposed deal was Ellsbury Masterson Bowden and Lowrie, which still would have been a fantastic deal for the Twins and possibly a lousy one for the Red Sox, but everything looks better in hindsight. The problem was trying to "win" the deal instead of making the best deal, look at what the Rays did in the Garza trade, they accumulated higher talent ceiling than the Greinke trade, for a pitcher (Grienke) who is considered by most to be better. Then again isn't the best Mets prospect like being the tallest midget? And Fangraphs has Santana's total WAR at 10, which is hardly what the Twins were getting from him at clips of over 7 WAR a year for 3 seasons, and certainly not what the Mets were paying him for. I know you can't predict injuries but if Santana had even one season like that in NY the trade would have been a disaster, whereas now it's just a series of unfortunate GM events. And probably evidence that the front office needs to go into a new direction with improved scouting of other team's farm systems, as they can draft their own talent but cannot evaluate others and can't afford to be major players in free agency.
